Most ants are black, brown, red, or yellow. Metamorphosis is complete. A soft, legless, white larva hatches from the egg; in most species it is completely helpless and must be fed and carried by adults.

The term has since come to be synonymous with the devil. Ants are commonly found feeding on the honeydew excreted by gray pineapple mealybugs, in particular the big-headed ant, pheidole megacephala (fabricius), which is the dominant ant species in hawaiian pineapple. Its mouthparts are held out by muscular action like a bayonet and are driven by force into the victim's flesh by a powerful thrust of head and body. Termites have two pairs of wings, at least for a while, that are similar in size and venation; adults generally shed their wings shortly after mating. The nandi of africa have as totems the jackal and the cockroach, for reasons that are not immediately apparent. More than 1 million species are known, and several thousand new ones are discovered each year.
